Bulgaria is becoming a sophisticated destination that attracts tourists wanting style and luxury rather than bargain hunters, the online travel portal Travelconnect.co.uk reported.
The site mentioned various attractions pulling Bulgaria away from its reputation "for cheap booze and fake watches" and transforming it into "a destination of boutique cities with style and culture". These include Bulgaria's burgeoning wineries that have received prestigious awards. As an example, Travelconnect.co.uk mentions the Todoroff winery operating from the village of Brestovitsain, skirting the Rhodopi Mountain near Plovdiv.
Other features contributing to the quality of tourism in Bulgaria are the "lavish and professionally designed golf courses," such as the Black Sea Rama, located near Balchik on Bulgaria's northern Black Sea coast.
The travel portal also cites Bulgaria's winter resorts as an attraction. At the end of 2007, the Guardian rated Bansko, located in the Rila Mountain in the south-west, as a top budget ski resort.
In the summer, Bulgaria attracts tourists with its diving opportunities. All along the Black Sea coast, divers can explore the sea's natural fauna and flora, as well as sunken ships - dating from thousands of years ago - to more recent times.
For all its diverse attractions, Bulgaria also remains substantially cheaper than other Western European destinations.
